Saggar Firing Adventure

Ever wondered what happens when you wrap your pottery like a mystery package, tuck in some special ingredients, and let the fire do its magic? That’s saggar firing! Bring 1–2 small bisque-fired pieces (under 5″ each) and we’ll load them up in our little saggar kiln for a one-of-a-kind finish. No two pieces ever turn out alike—it’s like pottery meets alchemy, with surprises revealed when the kiln cools.

Saggar Firing on Potter’s Alley! Participants learn to prepare & fire their pieces in a Saggar kiln. Explore multiple colors and surfaces, achievable with Art Off Center’s selection of oxides and finishes for the saggar.

Come in during our Open Studio times to make and create your piece(s) prior to the scheduled firing. All pieces MUST be bisqued fired first prior to the scheduled firing day. To avoid problems with cracking we recommend using a stoneware with grog. AOC stocks a Raku Soldate clay for this purpose.

Purchase a slot and bring your bisqued pieces for the scheduled time. Please arrive early to decorate your pieces!

The saggar kiln firing will start loading around 3pm, so arrive early to learn about the kiln, setup and how to load.

Price includes all instruction, firing, gloves, tongs, and equipment use.

Requirements:

-Pieces can not be larger than 5” diameter with a height up to 5” work best for approximately ½ cubic feet kiln space

-Fired bisque piece must be bisqued prior to firing day

-Bisque firing fees not included in Saggar Firing costs

-Wear comfortable clothes for firing, closed toe shoes required.
