Wilco Potters Club-August
Our next meeting will be on Saturday, August 24nd at 6pm with ceramic artist and photographer-Doc List AND a pottery tool swap!
We will be meeting at Round Rock Community Clay, located at 900 Round Rock Ave, Suite 310, Round Rock, TX.
We will discuss the basics about Wilco Pottery Club and gather some information and ideas about how to utilize this group for our “northern” potters and studios that live and work in and around Round Rock, Pflugerville, Cedar Park, Hutto, Taylor and Leander areas.
Doc will do a photography presentation, then we’ll proceed with the tool swap at the end of the meeting.
Doc List-Photographer, Ceramicist Bio:

Doc has been a photographer since his teenage years, growing up in an apartment in NYC. Doc and his brother set up a darkroom in a closet, small hallway, and the bathroom, and Doc has been taking pictures ever since. He chose to become a professional photographer in 2009 and recently shut down his local photography studio.

Doc’s mother took up pottery in her 40’s and continue for many years. His mother made plates and mugs and bowls and did lots of carving. Doc never liked the carving and “commissioned” a smooth mug from his mother. She made only two in her entire “career” and Doc uses one of them every day.

In 2021 Doc began exploring the hobby of making bonsai (small trees in pots), which led to him buying handmade pots. He realized he was paying a lot for the pots and decided to learn to make them himself. Starting in the Spring of 2022, Doc took his first classes, and relocated his making from Jubilee Pottery in Liberty Hill to Round Rock Community Clay in July of that year because he just wanted to be able to MAKE and MAKE and MAKE. He was a member at RRCC through June of this year, when he decided to take a break from the commute from Leander to Round Rock. Soon he will resume his acts of creation.

It was natural for Doc to experiment with photographing his pottery to present it in the best light possible (pun intended).

Wilco Potters Club-Tool Swap

Swapping pottery tools at an event is a fun and interactive way to refresh your toolkit and connect with fellow potters. Here’s how to make the most of it:

  1. Bring Your Tools, Glazes, Underglazes, Transfer papers: Gather gently used, unused or duplicates that you’re ready to part with. Clean them up to ensure they’re in good condition for the swap.
  2. Set Up a Mini Display: At the event, we’ll provide a table/area for the swap. Lay out your tools neatly on a table or mat, making it easy for others to see what you have to offer.
  3. Label and Share: If you have unique or specialty tools, label them with a brief description of their use. This helps others understand their potential value.
  4. Browse and Chat: Take time to explore other potters’ displays. Engage in conversations, ask about the tools, and share your experiences. This is a great opportunity to learn new techniques and discover new favorites.
  5. Make the Swap: When you find a tool you’re interested in, approach the owner and propose a swap. Be open to negotiation and fair trades. Remember, the goal is to find tools that will enhance your pottery practice.
  6. Enjoy the Process: Tool swapping is as much about community building as it is about finding new tools. Enjoy the interactions, make new friends, and leave the event with new additions to your pottery toolkit and a wealth of new ideas and inspiration.
